Our Team

Chuck Putney, CFP®, EA

Chuck is an Enrolled Agent (EA), CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner (CFP®) and Certified Senior Advisor (CSA). He founded the business in 1970. Chuck grew up in Missoula, Montana and Seattle, Washington and graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. He is a graduate fellow of the National Tax Practice Institute. After a career in engineering, management and management consulting, he entered the tax and financial services business in 1970.

An active member of several professional organizations, Chuck has served as the president of the East Bay Chapter of the National Association of Enrolled Agents, on the California State Board, as officer of the local FPA chapter, Estate Planning Council of Diablo Valley, the Planned Giving Council of Northern California and the National Association of Philanthropic Planners.

Chuck has worked with numerous non-profit organizations with humanitarian and social objectives, including the Eye Foundation, Oakland Lions Blind Center, Hearing Foundation, the Walnut Creek Library Foundation and other Walnut Creek community programs. Focused professionally on serving his community and making it a better place to live, he specializes in the use of charitable gifting strategies for those seeking to mitigate capital gains and estate taxes.

Chuck has served as an adjunct instructor at Golden Gate University and has taught tax, financial planning and investment courses. He is past president of the Diablo Valley Lions Club, has served as a deacon at Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church and serves on the Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church Foundation Board of Directors.

Dave Johnson, CFP®, EA

Dave is an Enrolled Agent (EA) and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner (CFP®). He joined the firm in 1990. Dave grew up in New York but moved to California in 1970. He has a BA in history from Antioch College in Ohio and a Master's Degree in Education from the University of California at Berkeley. He is a graduate Fellow of the National Tax Practice Institute. Dave has now worked in the tax field for more than 20 years. He entered the tax field after a career of 13 years with the California Employment Development Department and has experience as a stockbroker and insurance agent.

Dave's work experience includes working as a trainer for the State of California, as a consultant in the field of curriculum design and development, and as a teacher in the public schools.

Jacqueline M. Hershey, CPA

Jackie is a Certified Public Accountant. She grew up in Flagstaff, AZ, and graduated from Northern Arizona University in 1986 with a Bachelors of Science in Accountancy. She began her career with KPMG Peat Marwick in Phoenix, AZ, and transferred to the San Francisco office where she worked until 1990.

Since that time, Jackie worked in the financial reporting area of accounting for six years until she joined the Putney-Klein office. She began her own practice in 1996 by purchasing several small business bookkeeping and tax clients from Ed Klein. She has serviced those clients and grown her tax practice over the last 14 years. Jackie has worked closely with the Putney-Klein staff, and has taken over the tax preparation for many of Mr. Klein’s clients since his retirement in 2009.

Jackie is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the California Society of CPA’s, and has served as Treasurer of her children’s elementary school PTA.

Ed Klein, Associate Tax Consultant

Ed is an Enrolled Agent (EA). For 32 years he was the owner of the tax and accounting firm named Management Services, providing counseling, accounting and tax services to small business clients, individuals and other service organizations. Ed sold his accounting business to an independent CPA, Jackie Hershey and has joined Chuck Putney to form Putney Klein Associates, Inc., providing tax preparation and planning services.

Ed graduated from Golden Gate University with a Bachelor's Degree in Business, majoring in accounting, and has completed work towards his Master's Degree. Each year he completes 30 or more hours of continuing education.

Ed has raised five children and has been a resident of Walnut Creek for more than 40 years.
